The purpose and mission of the Division Directors SIG is to provide a forum for sharing information among academic division director’s including but not limited to General Pediatrics, Nursery, Hospitalist Medicine, Adolescent Medicine, Quality and Safety, Development and Behavioral Pediatrics and Child Protection. All these disciplines share similar issues such as academic development and promotion, financial constraints and educational and research priorities. We welcome all division directors to our annual meeting at the PAS annual conference as well as communicating with us throughout the year to discuss common issues.

The Division Directors SIG’s current goals are (1) to provide topics that resonate with all division directors that can be discussed at our annual meeting and (2) to improve communication between institutions and to share current successes and ongoing challenges that are allowing or not allowing your division to reach its potential.

Annual Summary

At PAS 2019 in Baltimore, the Division Directors SIG and Fellowship Training SIG joined forces to present “A Primer of APA Research Networks—What Every Division Director Needs to Know”. Our goal for the session was to introduce APA Research Networks (BORN, CORNET, & PRIS) to those in leadership positions as a means of driving engagement in the networks among residents, fellows, and faculty. Representatives from each of the networks gave an overview of the mission and their current projects: Karen Wilson for PRIS; Paul Darden, Iman Sharif, & Holly Tyrell for CORNET; and Carrie Phillipi for BORN. This was followed by 2 award presentations by physician scientists involved with the networks. For PRIS, Jessica Markham discussed “Variation in Inflammatory Marker Testing in Children Hospitalized for Infection”, and for BORN, Allison Lloyd-McLennan presented “Personal Breastfeeding Experience and Clinical Care of Well Newborns: A Mixed-Methods Study of the BORN Research Network.” The two-hour session concluded with attendees and speakers discussing ways to encourage participation in the networks. John Harrington and Mary Rogers will be rotating off as Division Directors co-chairs and will be succeeded by Terry Wall from UAB and Brian Lurie from Levine Children’s.
