Teaching in Community Settings

The Teaching in Community Settings SIG is an environment for all clinicians who teach outside the traditional academic setting to share common challenges, generate discussion regarding opportunities for improvement, and to network with like-minded community-based teachers. We welcome educators from inpatient, nursery, and outpatient pediatrics. Over the summer, we held an Innovations Contest where participants submitted their educational strategies and programs. Four submissions were chosen based on innovation, applicability to any clinical setting, being interactive, and willingness to share. These outstanding presenters represent both inpatient and outpatient clinicians who cannot wait to share their resources with you. This session will be followed by an open dialogue to chart future directions for our SIG. We hope you will plan to join us in Baltimore!

We seek to represent all clinicians who teach outside the traditional academic setting, supporting their interests and addressing their challenges, in an effort to improve the education of learners in community pediatrics. We welcome educators from inpatient, nursery, and outpatient pediatrics to share our common challenges, to generate discussion regarding opportunities for improvement, and to network with like-minded community-based teachers.

Current SIG Goals

  • To advocate for the interests and needs of community-based providers who are actively engaged in teaching.
  • To partner with groups interested in supporting and improving community-based pediatric education.
  • To reach pediatric educators in non-office-based settings in order to assess and represent their needs.

Annual Summary

This was an especially exciting year! For PAS 2019 in Baltimore, we held an Innovations Contest requesting entries from across the country. We had 4 winners who presented their Innovations in workshop format. Dr. Lindsay Fox shared her handoff tracking tool which their hospitalists use to track learner feedback over their rotation. Drs. Ann Allen and Tim Porter presented their work with senior residents’ rotations at community hospitals in Massachusetts and Wisconsin. This provides the residents experiences with autonomy and exposure to a community setting which they may not otherwise receive during training. Dr. Scott Vergano shared his tactic of giving learners homework. He discusses specific cases seen by the residents and asks them to look up the most recent guidelines which they then discuss together. We finished up with Dr. Wendy Hobson-Rohrer sharing her research on how to improve clinical placements for all types of interprofessional learners. Looking forward to this coming year, we will be recruiting for a new SIG co-chair and preparing for PAS 2020!
