Current SIG Goals

  • To facilitate the exchange of ideas between researchers, educators, and advocates in best practices in early literacy promotion
  • To maintain the presence of early literacy promotion as a focus at academic training centers
  • To support the development of pediatricians who can integrate early literacy as a social determinant of health in their communities, and advance early literacy and relational health promotion as a way to foster resiliency in at-risk families

Annual Summary

The Literacy Promotion SIG met in Baltimore at the 2019 Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) Meeting for a very full and exciting session! We began with a special preview from the Digital Natives Session and Danielle Erkoboni, Tiffany Munzer, Jim Guevara, and Jenny Radesky shared highlights of their presentations. Our keynote this year was given by Cathie Tamis LeMonda, Advances in Developmental Science: Informing Promotion of Early Development and School Readiness. She discussed the role of bookreading in children’s developing language and cognitive skills. We also heard from Reach Out and Read Young Investigator awardees. Erin Roby, the 2018 YIA awardee shared her progress on her project that investigated the impact of parental book reading strategies on low-income children’s social-emotional outcomes. This year’s awardee, Elizabeth Erickson, introduced her project, Reach Out and Read from Cradle to Clinic: a novel Reach Out and Read intervention in the Newborn Nursery. Marny Dunlap and Alexandria Caldwell then shared a Lit Net research network update focusing on their work with ROR training and residency programs. Nikki Shearman, from the National ROR Center, introduced plans for the “Next Chapter” and the upcoming 30th Anniversary celebration in November. Perri Klass then led a very interactive open discussion. As always, the session was packed, and we didn’t have enough time to finish all of the wonderful conversations! To help stay in touch, please sign up for the Reach Out and Read newsletters and join the AAP Council on Early Childhood. Please continue to share new ideas and updates on ongoing projects! We hope to see you again next
