The purpose and mission of the Patient and Family Centered Care SIG is to support individuals and programs that aspire to advance the field of patient- and family-centered care through clinical practice, education, quality improvement, and research.

Current SIG Goals

  • Develop and host an engaging, informative, and inspiring workshop at the annual Pediatric Academic Societies meeting that facilitates learning, collaboration, and networking opportunities for SIG members and others interested in patient- and family-centered care
  • Provide a forum in which SIG members can engage in networking, collaboration, and creation of new PFCC initiatives at local and national levels
  • A new strategic goal for the upcoming year is to brainstorm ideas and initiate planning for a longitudinal SIG-wide project that will lead to scholarly output

Annual Summary

Across 2018-2020, we aim to explore Coproduction. PAS 2019 was focused on Coproduction (with families) in program/innovation development and PAS 2020 will focus on Coproduction in Research. Additionally, we intend to produce a manuscript detailing the findings and approach of design thinking on care transitions during PAS 2019 joint PFCC-QI SIG meeting. The PFCC SIG successfully partnered with the QI SIG to host a dynamic, well -attended workshop on design thinking. We recruited 6-8 additional experienced facilitators from both SIGS, as well as 6 Family Partners, mostly from the Johns HOpkins Family Advisory Council, to collaborate in the workshop. Interspersed with brief didactics on design thinking, the groups interviewed parent parnters, then with parent partners at the table, iteratively developed, tested and revised innovations to directly meet the stated needs of the parent partners and their families upon leaving the hospital with their medically complex children. The PFCC SIG also attempted a PFCC journal club but that was not successful so was abandoned.
