The purpose of the Injury Control SIG is to support APA members from diverse clinical backgrounds in their efforts to reduce and prevent morbidity and mortality from injury among children and youth.

Current SIG Goals

  • To engage injury prevention researchers and advocates in a dynamic Injury Control SIG at PAS 2020 in Philadelphia
  • To provide a professional forum for individuals interested in preventing pediatric injury through clinical practice, community engagement, research, advocacy, and policy change
  • To advance best practices in pediatric injury prevention through research and program implementation

Annual Summary

PAS 2021 brought together the Injury Control and Advocacy Teaching SIGs for a virtual session on advocacy for politically charged issues. Focusing on the example of gun safety, we learned from national leaders in the field. Andrew Kiragu, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, University of Minnesota, Medical Director Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Hennepin Healthcare; National Board Member, Injury Free Coalition for Kids provided an overview of the epidemiology of gun-related injuries in youth and community engaged-prevention strategies. Sadiqa Kendi, MD, CPST, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Boston University School of Medicine; Division Chief, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Boston Medical Center discussed anti-racism and injury prevention policy. Patrick Carter, MD, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Health Behavior & Health Education, University of Michigan School of Medicine and School of Public Health; Director of the CDC-funded University of Michigan Injury Prevention Center presented on the current landscape of gun safety policy. Madeline Mier, MD,  Fellow, Pediatric Hospital Medicine, Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital provided an overview of gun safety education to better prepare pediatricians to discuss this topic with patients and families. Elizabeth Oddo MD, Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellow, Medical University of South Carolina was recognized for her abstract: Increase in Mental Health Diagnoses Among Children with Non-Fatal Firearm Injuries.
