Annual Summary

The Healthcare Value SIG has continued to make progress toward raising awareness of quality and cost issues in pediatrics in the last year. The SIG has focused on the SIG session at PAS and continuing our HCV Webinar Series. SIG Session at PAS in Baltimore: This year we brought together leaders of pediatric research networks to share with SIG members how they are developing evidence around how to achieve quality improvement and cost efficiency in pediatrics. Representatives from various pediatric research networks presented their work in relation to pediatric value individually and then participated in a panel discussion on the topic. The following speakers took part: Richard "Mort" Wasserman, MD - Pediatric Research in Outpatient Settings Network - University of Vermont Medical Center Alex Fiks, MD, MSCE - Pediatric Research in Outpatient Settings Network - Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Melissa Stockwell, MD, MPH - Pediatric Research in Outpatient Settings Network - New York Presbyterian Medical Center and Columbia Mailman School of Public Health Karen Wilson, MD, MPH - Pediatric Research in Inpatient Settings Network - Icahn School of Medicine and Mount Sinai Marquita Genies, MD, MPH - High Value Practice Academic Alliance - Johns Hopkins University Akshata Hopkins, MD - High Value Practice Academic Alliance - John's Hopkins Children's Center Shawn Ralston, MD, MA - Value in Inpatient Pediatrics Network - Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Matthew Garber, MD - Value in Inpatient Pediatrics Network - Wolfson Children's Hospital, University of Florida Henry Lee, MD, MS - California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative - Stanford University School of Medicine Additionally, we held our fourth annual Value of Stories Symposium featuring stories of high and low value care as told by trainees. We received over a dozen story submissions, which were evaluated and scored by experts in the field. Five stories were presented by the trainees during the conference representing a wide variety of clinical settings, experiences within pediatrics, and perspectives on issues of costs and quality. The SIG session was well-received by those in attendance. Health Care Value Webinars: Our pediatric value webinar series continued to raise awareness of issues in costs and quality in health care for children, featuring discussions with leaders in pediatric research on value. The goals of this webinar series are the same as the mission/goals of our SIG overall. The first webinar was delivered by Chris Moriates, the assistant Dean for Healthcare Value at Dell Medical School, lead author of the definitive book on healthcare value and the co-founder of Costsofcare.org. There were approximately 80-90 attendees (webinar capacity is 100). The next was delivered by Tom Newman from UCSF, focusing on the influence of industry on medical research and how industry bias negatively affects value. The plan is to continue to host the webinars quarterly.
